An air compressor performs an invaluable task by converting energy from a motor, be it electric or gas, into potential power that is compressed and kept under pressure in a tank. Once the tank pressure reaches its threshold, the compressor will shut off, storing the compressed air in the tank until it is needed. When put to use, the energy from the compressed air can perform multiple duties when released from the nozzles or fittings it is connected to; transforming and unleashing its contained kinetic energy as it expands through those appliances.
Today’s air compressors come in a variety of styles. The two main categories are positive displacement and dynamic compressors, which both bring their own advantages and disadvantages.
Compressing air is made possible by positive displacement compressors, which use a chamber of decreasing size to pressurize air. Typically, these models of air compressors are of the rotary screw, reciprocating, and vane compressor varieties.
The dynamic compressor functions by introducing air into the compressor with the use of impellers that turn around rapidly. The two most basic kinds of air compressors that are utilized are the centrifugal and axial.
A piston-type air compressor is the most prevalent kind around. This method of compressing air relies on a piston inside a cylinder that is connected to a crankshaft with a connecting rod. The crankshaft is run by an electric motor, a fuel-efficient gasoline engine, or a mighty diesel engine.
Despite being cost-friendly and easy to maintain, piston air compressors are not quite as energy-efficient as their contemporaries. However, the simplicity of the build makes them an ideal solution for many applications.
The rotary screw air compressor is the runner-up in popularity when it comes to air compressors. This type employs two interlacing helical screws within an enclosure to pressurize the air. Compared to the piston air compressor, the screw compressor is more efficient but it also comes with a steeper price tag when it comes to both construction and upkeep.
The rotary screw air compressor holds an edge over the piston air compressor, showcasing its superior efficiency. Although, despite its merits, it is the costlier option to construct and sustain in comparison.
All air compressors have a unique approach to pressurizing air, but none are more proficient than the centrifugal option. This compressor operates by taking in air from the core and using an impeller to fling it outwardly. However, even though it’s incredibly well-equipped, the materials and upkeep required to own one can be on the pricier side.
Amongst air compressors, the centrifugal style is the most efficient, however, it comes at a price – it’s the most costly to construct and sustain.
